Public hearing taking place during the EMPL Committee meeting of 23 June 2026, at the EP premises in Brussels.

Europe's demographic landscape is undergoing profound change. In all Member States population is rapidly ageing, while longer life expectancy and lower fertility rates are putting increasing pressure on pension systems across the Union. At the same time transformations in the labor market could negatively affect adequacy and sustainability of future pensions.

These developments raise important questions about solidarity both within generations and between generations.

In this context, the EMPL Committee organised a public hearing on “Promoting solidarity with and between generations through adequate pensions”. The main objective of the hearing was to give Members the opportunity to exchange views with experts, social partners, civil society representatives and other stakeholders on the challenges faced by national social security and pension systems and on possible policy objectives at national and Union level.
