On 6 October 2026, Member of the European Parliament Niels Geuking attended a meeting in Strasbourg with Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Roxana Mînzatu and the European Parliament's Intergroup on Fighting Poverty. The discussion focused on the planned EU Anti-Poverty Strategy, its political priorities, implementation timeline and financial requirements.

Among the key priorities highlighted by the Intergroup were tackling child and in-work poverty, combating socioeconomic discrimination, improving access to affordable housing, and addressing social exclusion.

Mr.Geuking emphasised that tackling poverty in Europe requires both adequate financial support and lasting minimum social standards. EU funding should be used effectively to achieve lasting improvements. Social standards must be maintained even if EU funding is reduced or discontinued, with Member States ensuring the continuity of essential support measures.

In this context, Geuking referred to the European Family Contract, which includes three key family policy measures: guaranteed child benefits, guaranteed parental leave and guaranteed access to childcare. The aim is to reduce child poverty and provide families with reliable, long-term support.

Geuking’s key message was positively received during the exchange. He will remain in contact with the European Commission to follow up on the proposals presented.
